The most offensive carcinogenic chemical in many modern paints are cyanoacrylates. These chemicals can enter a body via respiration and through exposed skin. A cheap respirator has minimal protective value (but, I use one when I am doing a small POR paint job - no harm done and it may be beneficial).

For those of you who fret about not taking precautions (non-daily painters), this government study make you feel better (let's assume these scientists would be government lackey alarmists).
