I fought the gas gauge today. I ended up rewiring the entire citciut, and giving it power directly from the accessory post of the ignition switch. Closer to the end of day, I narrowed it down to the actual gauge as the problem. So I gave the PO a visit who had a box of stuff from his cousins 55 for me. I then robbed everything but the temp gauge from the newly acquired instrument panel. And it worked! And looks better! I also got a steering wheel from a 55, tie rod and ends, heater controls, master cylinder, and what looks to be the entire wireing harness.
