Another possibility might be; a swap at the factory for some reason during the manufacture. Maybe at the last inspection it was discovered that the original was not functioning as designed. That would require someone to replace the part with one from supply. However if the color on top was red and from what you've said, it was, then perhaps the factory just failed to paint the back side.
Whatever, it's a great mystery.
