I have seen where a lot of guys are using the manifold vacuum port as you suggested. You may want to consider adding a vacuum canister as well, it would really help with your wiper motor. I think your better off using a metal line like your thinking, the rubber line is subject to collapse or get pinched. This thing should stop on a dime.
