I think you were up against rust on the threads on the nut that were exposed in the flats. On mine I just soaked them good and ran them back and forth a bit till they loosened up. At least there was no crimp on the nuts on mine. I don't think there's a need for Nylock nuts there as the spring is a giant lockwasher. But it can't hurt.
