Personally, I don't like to downshift if it isn't necessary. Brakes are cheaper and easier to replace than a clutch
I would agree with that--especially with an unsynchronized crash box transmission. I assume you'll mostly be driving it empty without a load on it, so it shouldn't be that much of an issue. And as mentioned, you'll get the hang of double clutching after you drive it a bit.
