Does it die as soon as you let off the starter? That would be an indication that you don’t have enough voltage to the coil.
Yes - That's what it seems like. Last year when I did a test start, I didn't use a ballast resistor because I was only going to run it for 10-20 seconds. So the coil was getting the full 12v I guess. I've read other threads where they say you need 7v to 9v after the ballast resistor.
