Yeah, It's always a good idea to check the current flow direction before committing to soldering them in. There's an 80% chance it'll be wrong the first try. Here's the web resource I referred to. Doing it with vacuum tubes would be kind of tough, as those things are a scarce as hen's teeth now. I recall heading to the hardware store to use their tube tester. Kind of dates me, of course.
