Be sure to deal with the over-voltage situation by either adjusting or replacing the regulator. One other suggestion might be to retro-fit the vehicle with a later-model internally-regulated alternator. The 10-SI alternator that was an OEM item from the late 1970's forward is a simple swap, and eliminates the external regulator.
