Has the distributor timing, or points been recently worked on? Sometime when cold the engine will crank fine, but when hot will grunt while cranking if the timing is slightly advanced, or if the point dwell is not correct.
My bet is a bad cell in the battery, but if the points haven't been checked in a while, look at them and maybe the inside of the distributor cap for burnt terminals.
