Jerry.....I took the ill-fitting starter back to A.Auto, and they pulled down another with the same part number. This one was an exact match to the old one, so I exchanged it. That was a huge relief......took it home and it fit into place perfectly.
Engine started right up, but I still have not had time to run her up the road to get the engine warm, and then try starting. I am hoping this does the trick.
