Glue the side cover to the block and the valve cover to the head. No sealant on the sheet metal. You can thank me later the next time you remove either cover. If your side cover and valve cover have been checked for straightness on the engine with a feeler gauge without the gasket in place, you shouldn't have any leaks, and you will be able to remove the sheet metal without having to replace the gaskets.
