Why won't the rocker assemblies rest in the proper spot? How will the oil tube be damaged?
Looks like you've managed to get past the point I was trying to make. Glad you found your solutions and things are moving along.
As far as your question on if using a spark plug gauge will work, the answer is - not really. Even the smallest gap gauge used for setting plugs (that use round wire to check) is too big for valve adjustment settings. You should be able to easily find a flat feeler gauge at any local Flaps.
Even Harbor Freight has an inexpensive one that will suffice.
