I pulled the thermostat out and I'm going to test it in a pan of water but it although had a lot of powdery rust particles and crud on it nothing big that looked like it might have been stuck. It is surprisingly a 160° thermostat. I have always assumed, for no particular reason, that it had a 180° thermostat in it.
