Well I may have answered my own question...I pulled the rear main cap and took a look. Apparently even though I thought I had the seal pushed in far enough, it must not have been, because it was pushed in further and the seal ends were about 1/16 of an inch below the cap surface. I pulled that seal out and got the other one out of the package. I got a bigger diameter dowel and really focused on getting this one in, pinching and pushing, then rolling the thing pretty hard once I got it in by hand. I was able to get it further in that time than I could with the first seal. I took a photo of the first seal when I installed it, and compared that photo with the 2nd seal, and I'm able to see I do indeed have it pressed in further now than I did the first time. I trimmed the ends and got it ready to go. I will work on getting it installed tomorrow, and hopefully everything works out!
