Check the Wikipedia and other on-line resources - a lot of people besides GM are mixed-up, it seems).
This cmpany seems to stay in business using the term. Balancing an engine is a distinctly different thing (and/or balancing components of the engine, or as engine sub-assemblies, or as an assembly).
I have installed many 216/235/261 harmonic balancers by gently hammering them on, hitting a block or large socket placed on the center of the balancer - no failures. One thing that I have started doing is putting the fan belt in place, to make sure I hammer no further than is necessary.
