Harmonics are not "balanced out" by anything, thus adding "damper" to the list of things you don't understand.
HRL's description of what his very useful tool does has nothing to do with using a hammer (it's to avoid a hammer).
I think the underlying problem is that you don't distinguish between things you don't like, and things that are wrong.
