I finally got back to my motor the other day. I still had trouble with that darn woodruff key that kept falling out. After spending some time measuring things, I realized that the milled slot in my old cam gear was deeper than the milled slot in my new cam gear. A futile visit to a machine shop nearby to see if they had the next smaller size key, resulted in me spending some time with a file, making my old woodruff key smaller. After some minutes of modifying, my cam gear dropped right over the woodruff key and cam end, and sat for a while to cool and shrink. The cam is now inserted in my motor and I’m ready to put the oil pan on.
Maybe I’m crazy, but I took all the oil pan bolts over to my wire wheel and cleaned all the crap off the threads, and then cleaned all the crap off the heads. Then I shot all the heads with gloss black and will fasten my pan in place when the paint is dry.
