I have been beating my uncooperative legs into submission with regular walks to nowhere on our basement treadmill. They’re not happy, but they are also not in charge. The most difficulty I have is in standing, so I found myself what I like to call “an [censored]-job”. This particular a-job has been to tear down the 292 cu in motor I have had in inventory for 5 or 6 years. My wonderful wife bought me a Vyper chair for Christmas last year, and it’s finally getting some use.
The first order of business has been to remove the manifolds and carb, peel off the fuel pump, remove the distributor and head. The harmonic balancer presented a problem in that it didn’t want to come off with the 3 jaw puller I had, so I moved on to removing the pistons. It was after I had all the pistons sitting on my bench that I phoned the machine shop where the block is destined, to find out exactly what they needed. That would have been a phone call best made before removing the pistons. I want to deck my block, and that can’t be done without an existing measurement from the top of the piston crown to the top of the block. Hmmm. I guess one of those pistons has to be reinstalled on the crank to get that measurement. I’ll pretend the block is already bored out and the re-install is practice for the actual re-install.
I’m waiting for a couple of tools before proceeding. One is a harmonic balancer puller, the other is a piston ring compressor.
