This posting from the 67-72chevytrucks forum shows a drawing from the '68 Owners' Manual. It shows a one piece OD shift rod.

I re-read the instructions in the BW manual and in the Ford manual. Both instructions show a shift rod that looks like the one shown in the above drawing. My shift rod is different and looks like the one shown in the instruction that I linked in my original posting. The middle photo on page 4 of that instruction shows the two piece shift rod. The pin that I think I have a problem with is the one shown in the lower left. I do not find reference to a bushing. Something is different about mine. I'll keep looking.
