Not actually holding all of the different parts does make it hard for me.
How tight is the fit between the strainer T-stat and the upper housing machined surface at the outlet, maybe it's close enough that a gasket is not required? If it's not even close than it defeats the purpose of having a T-stat by allowing the (16) 1/4" holes to flow coolant to the radiator all the time.
I believe one of Tim's pictures shows the thick donut gasket with one of the T-stats.
The other point is that T-stat was 1962 only...what's different about the '62's???
