They also didn't have the modern radiator core options we do today. My US Radiator brass replica has more cores and smaller tubes supposedly to cool better. I think it was just something GM tried back then as a stop-gap because of overheating problems on heavier trucks. The concept of bypass thermostats lasted a whole 4-5 years?
