just curious as to where your exhaust exits on your truck.just seeing what others are doing. do yours run all the way out over the axle,or in front of the wheels out the side or are you just using turn-downs off the muffler(s)......dave

My 55 exits behind the rear axle and under the rear bumper.Whereas my 65 exits in front of the rear wheels.Course I am running Flowmasters on both of them, and they both sound good. Its ust a matter of personal taste.

I like em to exit out the back under the rear bumper with chrome tips. Not good if its lowered & go down steep drives. Also not good on a panel truck. Fumes can come in.

Just forward of the left rear wheel, cut flush with the running board. I can seeit through my mirror and hear it as I drive if I open the window.

It's just forward of the pumpkin on the right side of the firetruck. vents fumes away from the pump operator while flowing water out of fire hoses.

I haven't decided yet. Thought about under the running boards just in front of the rear wheel with a flattened tip that exits through the board itself, but I will be using flowmasters & don't want it to be too loud in the cab. I've also seen some that dump just over the rear axel that look pretty good. I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get to that point.

im thinking of running side pipes on my 3/4 ton truck. its already got dual fenton headers. originally had dual going out over the rear axle and under the rear bumper, but had to remove them to fit my 16gal aftermarket fuel cell inbetween the frame rails and behind the rear axle.

And getting back to the stock location, and just where can one find exhaust systems for an AD? Looks like all of the vendors quit handling them.
As one of out members recently wrote about, the muffler shops only have one standard bend they can make and it doesn't match the sweep at the head pipe. You could get away with it on the hump going over the rear axle but it looks to out of place up front.

On my 55 2nd, the exhaust exits over the axle and out under the rear bumper with chrome tips. Looks and sounds great.

All depends how much sound you want and what portion of it you like to hear.

With short mufflers and tail pipes exiting before the rear wheels you hear the whole range of sounds of the engine, plus the sound that bounces of walls and other cars in the other direction.
Gives a rawer and louder sound.

Same mufflers with longer tail pipes exiting straight out the back and under the bumper would make things a lot quieter inside the cab, even with windows rolled down.
Gives a softer and quieter sound.

One thing is very important for a balanced good tone - equal length pipes !! Also reduces popping at deceleration.

I had a little fun this summer and drove with straight pipes exiting right under the cab...
Crazy how huge the sound of a 235 with headers and straight pipes get.
With 24x3 tips it sounded like a big block or 3 Harleys at once - no kidden.
Way too loud for a driver, but was fun for about a week.

In the coe about 4' from the exhaust manifold! grin Sounds great!

Eventually Ill run it out and drop it just forward of the rear axle.

I like side outs just before the rear bumper on pick-ups. I pull trailers and stuff and don't like full exhaust blowing in my face while hooking up or the black soot getting on my trailer or boat,

What size pipes are you using? I'm thinking 2 1/2" inches.

I have Patrick's dual stainless exhaust. Exits just below the left side of the bumper in a shotgun style. Looks cool!

Pipe diameter depends on rpm.
Stock 235 with dual exhaust likes 1-3/4" to 2".
Any larger and you lose low end torque.

Fentons with 2" duals and Patricks dual in/dual out stainless muffler. The pipes run straight out the back w/ bowtie tips. Keeps it more quiet in the cab and keeps the tailgaters at bay!

On my 67 they exit in front of the rear wheels, but they're rusted pretty bad and will need replaced. I'll probably run them over the axle and out behind the rear wheels, never liked straight out the back on a truck when I work with them.

On The Road Again, I've read a little about exhaust tuning and never seen anything about pipe size versus torque, except maybe on two strokes.

Please tell me I'm wrong that the best thing to do with exhaust pipes is use a size that reduces back pressure as much as possible.

Headers are a different matter. Differences in horsepower and torque from different header designs are easily documented, but I've always heard that max values are achieved when the headers are run open. No other exhaust system at all. That made it seem to me that best performance, both power and torque, would be achieved with the least amount of back pressure.

I think I may be able to do some experiments with back pressure in the not too far distant future. If I do, I'll share my results.

my 292 runs a stovebolt cast 3+3 header to a walker, out over the axle to the rear then down, dual 1.5'' in - single out 2.25''. all under the driver side, w/ muffler as far back as possible.

I've done a bunch of experimenting with back pressure on motorcycles. A smaller diameter pipe = better performance at low and moderate RPM's, and better fuel economy. A larger diameter = more high-demand, high-speed power, but less economy and more backfiring on deceleration, and needs a richer air-fuel mixture to keep from running too hot. I think a 2" pipe and a low-restriction muffler will give a Stovebolt its best "happy medium" in a light truck.

I have a 60 Apache 10 stepside and they exit out both sides in front of the rear tires. I like the sound,it's not real loud until you step on it. I don't know how other cars like it at a light though with fumes aiming towards their cars or windows. No complaints so far, but I don't drive it that much either. The truck has a 350ci mildly built and the exhaust was like that when I bought the truck,I just changed the chrome tips on them.

I ran mine to a 4 x 4 x 30 inch collector box behind the cab with two stainless 2 inch stacks and rain caps. Straight pipes sound great especially on a long hard pull !

Right now, Number Seven has no pipe extending past the muffler.

At some point, I will be putting a little more on there, but that's not for a while yet.

Mine exits thru the rear roll pan. It also creates a back draft that stains the tailgate. Have to clean it every week. Pain in the butt.

My GMC 248 has Fenton headers, 2 1/4" pipes through Corvair Turbo mufflers and 2 1/4" tailpipes all the way to rear bumper with chrome tips, both on the driver's side. I think it sounds good but kind of subdued until you give it full throttle, then it sounds off a little.
