Most guys leave the shims in place on the 54 block but it may make sense to grind the crank to fit the bearings without the shims.Does the shims or lack of shims affect the bearing crush or what?Or do the shims extend over the edge of the shell? Remember a street 235 putting out 160 HP isn't very stressed out.
