Well, I guess I had better get ready to eat some crow--is it any better with lots of ketchup???
I was thumbing through my latest Harbor Freight catalog and found a 6pc. set of telescoping gauges for the sale price of $9.99. I thought they would be almost as expensive as an inside micrometer, but these are cheap. I then dug out an old Enco catalog and their price is the same for the Enco (import). The highest Mitutoyo is around $100.
