If you are not tired of reading about this topic, and you are patient, and you can orientate yourself in viewing "foreign" photos, Pre '68 Dave (it looks like Dave's classic Puget Sound lecture images) has made an excellent tutorial on old-block vs new-block castings and water pump orientations.

Photo 21 is a good one for this discussion
My guess is that many members/posters here have not had the opportunity and inclination to study the two generations of blocks.

When you look at the photos of the front of the two styles of blocks, first be sure to orientate yourself to "top" and "bottom" of the blocks (some of the photos are "sideway" images.
