Old school way to set timing which also factors in the local gas's octane rating is to find a reasonable slight uphill grade...... accelerate uphill in high gear.....if you don't hear preignition or labor knock, add a bit more timing.....continue this routine until you do hear labor knock, then back timing off until it just stops. That's where the engine likes it's timing set. Then pull out the timing light, see where it is and use that for future reference. Of course if you ever haul or pull a real load with the truck you should be ready to adjust timing down a bit if necessary.
