Jerry, doesn't that geometry apply only if you shim just one half of the seal piece (or bearing half)? I mean if you wrap a piece of .002" thick shim stock all the way around the circumference of say a crankshaft journal and mike it, you'll now have a total of .004" less no matter which 2 diametrical points you choose to measure. Top, bottom, parting sides, wherever you choose, the reduction will be identical as long as the shim is applied equally all around the journal.
If you used a tapered shim (let's say .004" tapering to .002") under both the top and bottom bearing half, the centers of both bearing halves would be pushed in by .008" whereas each side would only be pushed in by a total of .004". Right?
