I did know about the “fuse protects wire” thing. I had not given much thought to “which end” of the wire being a consideration.
Is it fair to think of the entire run from starter to BATT on the regulator as one run? The ammeter itself just happens to be part of the run? Protect it in one spot and call it good?

Someone earlier in the thread, maybe Bill, said they have a circuit breaker not far from the starter. That would be my favored approach.
