After posting in the Engine Shop, I got a response asking if the heads had been milled. My response was no, but the block was decked.
Based on the assumption that decking the block caused the problem, I started doing research on that. I found that yes, that can cause my issue. The solution is to use a distributor shim kit to readjust the distributor height so that it is not bottoming out like mine is now.
