I've performed only the cam break in, retorque, and check for leaks.
I've never cut the oil filter nor do the "ring" method.
IMO everything kinda "seats" itself during the cam break it.
Another method some use to "break-in" a recently rebuilt engine is to drive it at various speed...35 mph for 10 minutes, 45 mph for 10 miles, up to 55 mph for 10 miles. Then drive it normal but not exceed 55 mph for the first 200 -300 miles.
