I don't know if there is a favorite one or not. But just taking the old beast out for a drive is always entertaining. At least 3 or 4 times every time I go out someone wants to know what year it is, then there is always the stories, about how their dad had one, one fella said when he was a kid he and his parents visited 30 states in one. That had to be fun for the kid, but his poor mother...

When I first finished my 50 I had told my grandson (4 years old) while restoring it that it would be his someday. So when we went for his first ride he said to me "I like what you did with my truck grandpa."

I'd have to agree with brokenhead. Every time I take her out or I'm in the driveway wrenching, someone wants to talk about the ol' girl.
So far my fave in the truck was just the other day when a couple of Hispanic guys pulled up next to me at a traffic light in a black Esclade with big chrome rims, tinted windows and bass thumping. The passenger lowered his window and said "Nice ride esé!" and shook his head approvingly.

a lady rolled down her windows one day at the chicken finger place and said, while laughing: my kids said this about your truck: It's MATER!!!

(from the movie cars, for those of you who haven't been around any kids in the last 10 years).

I just laughed and gave 'em a thumbs up.

I didn't want to explain that they were about a body style off.

Brad Allen - HAHAHAHA. That is a good one.

p.s. this should be an amusing thread 'Bolters, so let's keep it going and on topic. Thanks.

Most interesting comment I have received recently was from a lady who walked up to my unrestored ratty old '51 suburban at a car show and said, "When I look at that, I can't help but think of all the births, deaths, weddings and flower shows that that truck has seen. I just want to lay my hands on it."

I said "go ahead" And she proceed to lay both hand on the side of the burb with her eys closed for about 10 mins. and then walked away with a beautific smile on her face.

Made her day, I guess.

My favorite was in Lowes parking lot, some guy yelled to me "man, that's a clean truck". Then the whole time he was loading his truck he kept telling his freind over and over "man, that's a clean truck"

My 1954 1/2 ton truck "Old Greenie" has a lot of patina with the oxidized paint, scratches, scrapes and a few little surface rust spots. A few years ago, I found a 1950's camper shell with rust on much of the surface. It didn't seem to make sense to put new paint on the shell that would conflict with the patina on Old Greenie so I put the shell on, as found. One day a lady in her fifties came up to me in the parking lot and exclaimed "Your truck is beautiful. It is PERFECT! Don't you dare change a thing". The word "PERFECT!" brought me an inner chuckle but I knew what the lady meant. Old Greenie is perfect to me too and a great, long-time friend from the vintage steel species. Many people say how they like Old Greenie as she is and not to change anything. Only about one in ten say paint/restoration would be an improvement. Stovebolt trucks spread feel-good happy moments all over the world, every day. I was very happy when I saw that Old Greenie and her buddy "The Taj" a travel trailer with 61 years of aluminum patina, were included in the Stovebolt 2012 General Trucks calendar (month of November).

Had a guy pull into a parking space next to the truck & as he got out, he hit my door a good thump. I got out & asked him to be more carefull.
His comment - " what the hell, its just an old truck"
He had 4 flat tires when he returned to his car.

My favorite comment came from a woman in the grocery store parking lot. She was sitting in her car waiting on her husband and I parked the Suburban behind her. As I walked past she said, "When I heard that door shut I knew what it was and had to turn around and look". She said her dad had an AD truck for years when she was growing up and she hadn't heard that sound in years but immediately recognized it.

While I was talking to her, her husband came out of the store and he went nuts over the Suburban. He said he was in a band and they rode all over Texas in a Suburban like it back in the day.

Since I can't hear very well I've learned to read lips pretty good and its comical, and appreciative, when going down the road or interstate and I look over at someone riding beside me and they're looking through their window and say "I like that truck". I just grin, nod my head.

When I started restoration on my '41 just 13 months ago, my father-in-law told my son, "He's in way over his head; he'll never finish that." I'm just putting the finishing touches on the restoration now and can't wait to drive it out to his place and let him have a look.

Nice.....what is it?

or "Wow, I'm surprized that thing is still on the road!"

or, as I'm putting groceries in the back of the truck at the grocery store: "Does it run?" How do you answer that one?

and least favorite: "I used to have a Ford just like that one"

I had a guy look at my truck at a car show once and he stated to me that" GMC's are just Chevrolets with lockwashers". Don't know if that was a compliment or not?

Last weekend we drove the '51 suburban out to the country to pick up the tree. Lady in the parking lot said "That is so cool, is it a ...... Volkswagen?"

Everyone who sees my truck seems to have a story about their childhood that revolves around a truck like this. The comments that stick in my mind are:

1. My dad who got me into restoring cars, shortly after I dragged my new project home: "you paid how much for that POS?! You got screwed." Now he constantly tells me NEVER sell that beautiful truck.

2. I had nearly completed a frame-off restoration except for new wheels and bedwood. While filling up at a gas station, a guy said "you're going to have a beautiful truck when you finish it". Whatever. I have a beautiful truck now!!!

3. Drove over to a new restoration shop near my house, and listened as the shop owner told me he only works on muscle cars and convertibles. Another passerby stopped in to ask about the beautiful truck out front. After the shop owner went out and inspected my truck for quite a while, he asked "you looking to sell it?" Nope.

Shortly after we dragged the '37 home and parked it on our extra lot, my Mom came to visit. I was showing her around the yard, introducing her to the dogs, etc... and she kept looking over at the truck with this worried look on her face. Finally, she asked, "how far does your property line go?" I laughed and said, "yep, Mom, it's my truck - ain't it a beaut'?" LOL ... seriously priceless!

I usually get one of three things when out in my COE:

1. What year is that truck?
2. I've never seen anything like that.
3. What the L is that thing?

But my favorite happened at a gas station. This guy does a u-turn and pulls up at the pump next to me. He jumps out and says "That thing is so ugly that it's cute. It looks like one of those Pug dogs.........wanna sell it". I told him Naaaa and he says "Well that's ok it probably only gets like 10 miles per gallon" I tell him yea something like that. ( I average 5-7mpg) smile

I hope to get some interest when I finally put mine on the road and I expect I'll hear some interesting and funny comments.
So far, the comment that sticks is from my wife when she saw the truck after I pulled off the front clip.
"It looks sad".
Indeed...

I don't know if this counts, but at a recent car show a young, good looking lady (anyone under 40 I consider young)kept looking at my '58 stepside. I approached her asking if she had any questions. She said the truck was just like her grandfathers pickup that he took her for rides in when she was a little girl.

She asked if she could sit in the truck. Of course, I said. After a few minutes she got out with tears in her eyes and asked if she could give me a hug and a kiss. YOU BET!!

That certainly made my day!

The Scene:

Guy sitting outside a coffee shop at an outdoor table with friend, I pull into a drive-in space in front of the shop and step out.

Conversation:

Guy (30-40 year old) says, "I see you have a '49 YOM plate, your truck isn't a '49 it's a '51."

I smile and proceed inside as I'm there for coffee and not to argue with a fool.

My Chevy isn't done yet, but we're always cruising around in the fiance's '50 Dodge 1/2 ton. It's an all original truck with 83,000 on the clock, a nice patina'd paint job, and even the original bed wood. I find it funny how polarizing the truck can be. The majority of people that see it demand that we don't touch it and leave it the way it is. The others always ask when we're going to paint it or restore it? They never understand why we say "never" and usually walk away with a very confused look on their face. We like it just the way it is and it's only original once.

At a show a couple of months ago, I had the pleasure of being parked about 20 feet from the lovely porta potty. A young lady (early 20's) came out with a rather confused look on her face. I was wiping down the truck and she asked if I had a spare rag...i said sure and handed her the one in my hand. She said nice truck, I love classic trucks....and can you tell someone that the pink soap in the sinkof the porta potty doesn't work for *. I ha dto laugh, because there is no sink in the porta potty...it was the urinal cake. One of the funniest * things I've ever seen
