Do you have the transmission in neutral when you're trying to rotate the ring gear? If not, then it's going to be tough to turn unless you can also rotate the engine. Be sure you're in neutral and try again.

You could leave the transmission in gear and get a helper to bump the starter with the ignition off to see if the carrier changes position.
