The factory wiring diagram shows the wire going directly to the headlight switch. Doesn't show how the bundle is arranged or the path.....so I would stay with that wire until the end so we get educated. From what you describe it seems no one has been inside the bundles, but who knows for sure yet.
You can test that terminal on the headlight switch now that you see where it is. See if it has juice. Touch the terminal not the wire only.
