My dad worked for Wright Aeronautical during the big one. He met my mom there. Mom made the cylinders for the B 17 engines.
Dad was put on engine testing and break in. He would run the engines and compile data in a book that went with the plane that each engine was installed in.
I do not remember all he the data he did record. Though I know dad would chart oil consumption, SFC, specific fuel consumption, at various RPMS at other settings.
That data would be given to the navigators. They then would be able to determine the point of no return for there own plane. And let the pilot know what RPM to run his engines at to get the maximum distance.
