I have six points distributors, and if you chuck them up in a drill (oil pump end) you can check for wobble. I was very surprised at how worn all six of mine were. Wobble is apparent in every one. Then, some are looser between the shaft and the housing than others.
What that does is cause dwell problems and very erratic timing varying sometimes as much as 5 degrees. The wobble creates point gap issues and the looseness creates timing issues. BOTH of these problems are irrelevant when you stick the HEI system in. Those two problems are completely cleared up providing the wobble or looseness isn't just crazy. The older these distributors get the more this problem is emphasized. After all the testing I am doing, going through all of these distributors, I am learning alot. The neatest thing is the Timing Light I got for these tests. It allows me to change the advance to measure. Very sweet! Everyone needs one of these:
