I bought the truck without a working battery, and bought an 8 volt on the advice of my FLAPs man. Or to put it in other words, I had no particular starting problems that led my to choose an 8 volt battery. Although the starter could use renovating, I expect the starting system is in good enough shape to work fine on 6 volts, that is why I would return to 6 volts.
My dad and I are working over a 1941 Chev sedan (in the Alt gallery!), which still has its 6 volt battery. That car turns over just fine, better than my truck. Of course, it has some compression problems...
After a few years of learning experience, I agree with the many voices on these pages that an 8 volt battery treats the symptoms of a sick changing or starting system, not the causes of those problems.
