Then got the system charged and I now have A/C just in time for Texas' summer. And the squealing belts are back. hurrumph.
PS - driving in a drizzle, even at only 35mph, without a windshield is not recommended without face protection. Front and back glass get installed Thursday.

More involved than I thought! I got the old channel out and the inside whiskers. Then I went for the outer wipe. It's the first time I've seen clutch-head screws on my truck! I need to remove the glass to change the wipe, and there are for of these screws holding the glass in. So, I wait for the new screwdriver tips to come in the mail.... I can continue the job, and finish this later... Removing the perimeter weatherstrip makes me realize that it would be an easier job with the door off. No problem. I notice the lower hinge strap is a little loose... I'll check it later. I finish removing and replacing the weatherstrip (I put the inner whiskers on with weatherstrip adhesive) and I'm ready to put the door back on. Time to look at the hinge. As I'm wiggling the hinge strap to see how bad it is, the strap comes out in my hand... Hmmm... That loose! Out comes the hinge bracket. When I first look at it, it looks like there were pivot bumps on the bracket and dimples on the strap! That's how bad it was. I punched out the pin ends from the bracket no problem, then went after the strap. Holy cow! The pin was harder to remove than the original king pins on my axle! I ended up using the same method to remove it. I use a u-joint removal tool with a plate across the hole with a smaller hole in it. I removed the press-end of the tool and inserted a pin punch. Crank down the tool... Whack the end with a hammer... Crank some more... Hammer some more. Penetrating oil, heat, still took most of a day. Broke one vise and bent one punch, but I got the pin out! Of course, hinge pins for a 49 just aren't on the shelves at the local NAPA. Besides, I wanted to put in a bushed pin. I went to a FLAPS and got a pin kit for a 70's Furd/Chrysler. Slightly thicker than the original. Pin, 2 bushings and a C-clip for $10, and no waiting. I drilled the bracket for a snug fit for the pin. The original steel hinge pads were still welded to the bracket, so they were drilled as well. I used a larger drill to make a loose fit through the strap, then drilled each end of the hole for a tight fit for the bushings. Pressed the bushings in with a vise. I had to file the hinge pads to fit the bushing heads. I made them fit snugly and made sure they were smooth. I pounded in the new pin to seat the knurled end and installed the clip. The hinge is tight and smooth. Nice! I think this will be the SOP whenever I have to pull a hinge. Might as well fix them if I have them out. Now to continue the job I started....

Well, today I finished up the REAR doors on my panel. I had to switch the right side door latch and then, on the bottom of left door, I put in the latch and the rods. Tigten up the striker plates. I don't know if it's in the right position yet but it runs when power is put to it. However it runs all the time with the key on. The switch has no off position I guess. I can't seem to find where to bolt the adjustable brace. I bought this motor from LMC and the directions are impossible to understand. No pictures just, "bolt the motor to the original mountings." It doesn't say anything else about how to mount it. %*&#$@&%$#@

We have the original middle and rear braces, both in good shape, but it was going to be a nightmare trying to get the middle one in there (probably should've done it out of the truck). Anyway, I just put the rear brace (with the screws) in and found that the two halves of the cardboard overlap nicely and it actually looks much cleaner.

The Head will not pass Mag... need to send it to Oakland, CA to have the exhaust ports welded. I have lot's of 248 and 270 heads but the other 302 heads are buried in a container that is going to take me a few days to get through. If I don't find more 302 heads by Monday I'm gonna take a road trip. Got the bed off today... My nephew John wanted to learn how to restore a car. He came down Weds. and already has learned how to take off rusty bolts and today learned how to use a cutting torch. Pulled out of the garage for the first time in five years. Drove up and down the driveway a couple times. Realized time has finally come to yank, clean, and seal the tank because it's full of crap and a big reason I haven't driven it for so long. It's been a good day! my truck cruddy fuel pump fuel senderEntire inside of tank is like this, so I'll be looking for some cleaning/sealing tips. tankOutside looks pretty good with only minor surface rust.
