I'm new at this. I would like to know what NOS stands for?

New Old Stock ,something that is unused but many years old.

If something is NOS, doesn't it have to be a factory supplied item? If the part was made by a aftermarket supplier isn't it considered NORS?

NOS refers to a FACTORY produced part ..usually it is something that was in inventory and never sold ...and NOW 50 yrs later someone has these items prob. bought at auction and if there advertisment is true ..the parts should be in the factory box with the factory part #.
I have scored some nice parts for my Laguna project that are in the sealed GM bag ..or at least have the GM part # sticker on em.

Tim, I agree with what your saying, the point I was trying to make is that if a part was sold at a auto parts store, say a water pump with a Allied Grapho label on it then it would not be a NOS part but rather a NORS part.

I've been buying old electronics parts for years.. I have another expensive hobby besides old trucks.. Old vacuum tube amplifiers..
Anyway, NOS is the term they use for new old stock.. Meaning original manufactured parts from that era that have never been used..

NORS I believe is New Old Replacment Stock which as mentioned was an old unused part that was made by the aftermarket as a factory replacment part.

NOS means "double the price".

Unfortunately it seems that nowadays many people will use the term NOS to refer to any old original manufacturer part, whethter it's new and in the original container or if they pulled it off a truck and it's used. In its true sense, it should only be used as described above.

Boy, All those acronyms is like learning a whole new language!

Of course up here in the NW, being from TX all I get is "Where you from?" or "Boy you sure do have an accent! I usually tell them I'm from SW WA or I never had an accent until I moved up here.

I'll say the price goes up - a pair of NOS Cameo taillights just sold on EBay for $1465. My My My.
