I'm new to the forum. Just hauled home my 1966 Chevy Custom 1/2 ton lwb a couple of days ago. It's got a 283 with 3 on the tree. What a great truck!!
Although I have been involved in car restoration and modification for more years than I care to count this will be my first truck. So I am sure I will be tapping the vast knowledge base here on this forum.

Welcome aboard! I love to see the '64-'66 Chevy trucks owners unite. I drove these trucks when I was a youngster and now collect them. It is hard to concentrate on life's daily responsibilities when you have a stovebolt in the garage/driveway calling your name.
Enjoy your project and don't be shy about picking the brains of all the stovebolters on this site. They are a wealth of knowledge and experience. Good luck with your project and welcome aboard.

One of the first jobs I had, I worked for an auto parts company doing inventory, and handling accounts payable and receivables. Occasionally, I would need to run out and visit customers and would need to take a company vehicle. One of the owners had a blue '65 a lot like the '66 I just picked up. Guess which company vehicle I always took to visit customers. Well here's the deal. About 5 months ago we adopted a retired thoroughbred racehorse. I have a Suburban but everytime I needed to go pick up a load of hay I needed to borrow my brother-in-law's pick-up.
So I started looking for a truck of my own. Me being the classic car idiot I am, figured "why not an old truck?" They have so much more character than newer trucks - and are a lot more fun too. So the search was on!
This '66 is in really good shape. I should be able to get it usable in a week or two. I was planning on using it to "haul hay" and misc. other chores while fixing it up as I go. The truck was surprisingly complete and in good shape. It runs good and goes through the gears. The bed floor is shot, radiator has a leak, and something's up with the brakes but, I fell in love with her and that's all easy stuff to fix.
My 14 year old daughter loves the truck. As a matter of fact she was the one that took the pictures so she could take them to school and show them off. By the time you get it perfect, you will need to buy another to use for hauling hay, Hence, multipal truck ownership. Sorta like 4-5-6 Chev earlier in this thread. In addition to being much more unique, it's also easier to work on. I'm willing to bet that the price you will have ended up paying for the '66, will be less than you would have paid for any modern headache, I mean truck, even after the minor repairs that you have noted. There's a landscaper in this town that uses a 58 Chevy, and it always seemed to me to be a great idea for free advertising. You notice his truck-in a positive way-much more than any F150, Silverado, etc. that the other landscapers use. Lucky for us that not many people take such a sensible approach, otherwise our hobbies (trucks) wouldn't be nearly as affordable.
Oh, and it's great to hear that your daughter wants to learn to drive the old three on the tree. I really appreciate a girl (or guy) who can drive a stick. One of my room mates and I used to joke about it in college, but I ended up married to a woman who drives a stick, has never even owned an auto, and doesn't plan to ever own an auto, if at all possible.

Rule in my house anyway: "no driver's licence if you can't drive a stick". My oldest daughter fought this rule tooth and nail - my youngest one can't wait to drive a stick. You never know when you are gonna have to drive someone else's car in an emergency and it will be a stick.
And you're right about the truck. I defintiely thought it might as well have some personality - something different from every other truck on the road. That and I have a soft spot for vintage tin. Currently, along with the truck, we provide food and shelter for a 1953 Belair 2-door, a '71 VW convertible, and a '69 GTO convertible. I ground the gears, killed her, but I learned! My dad gave me a 4speed F150 4x4. And I have also driven a 3 on tree...which may I ad...is VERY confusing once youve learned to drive a floor shift! Anyhow. Standard is like a bike, you never forget. I have gone above and beyond with my "adopted" daughter and taught her to drive in a $100 banger ford tempo. Once she learned, I sold the car ($800) its only purpose was to teach her. Now she plods around on our tractor and old Big Red 3 wheeler. All thanks to learning to drive a stick! GOod luck with your pretty truck...I cant wait to get this one I have done so I can go buy my dreeeeeeeeeeam truck!

I learned to drive a manual with a three on the tree and have no problem going back and forth between the Ol' Buckin' Bronco and my daily driver, which has a five speed. My wife on the other hand doesn't like driving the truck, and one of the reasons given is the difficulty she has getting used to the three on the tree.
