Arrive at 9:30, temp upper 80's outside and getting very hot in the cab! Clean off the bugs, set and cool down drinking lots of water, wife is ready to go. By 1:30 ready to leave till the judges tell us we won a class, great, now we will be hear till 4:00 pm. By 4 it was really cooking, no place to cool off and the water is running low, wife was HOT, I was HOT, and the drive home was going to be really HOT! We did win the award for best 1940 and older truck, but there were 360 cars and they gave out 100 awards, so was it worth it, lets just say I won't go to any more shows when its 95* and humid, The drive home was the longest 100 miles I have ever driven. Sunday, stay inside and keep cool for Monday I return to work, OUTSIDE!!!! I spent a soild 5 minutes driving around the Dodge in my '50 Chevy 3100 giving the Dodge the finger and shouting obsenities at it.
Today i'm going to get the bumper brackets for my '50 3100 so I can FINALLY pull the Mad Max home-made bumper off the front and but the stock bumper on.

Have a little more banging to do on the hood to get them perfect. Then I start all over again with 600 grit wet or dry. Is this sanding ever going to end.I don't know where I get the patience to sand for ten hours a day . Saturday morning I loaded up my 1949 3800 series flatbed, hooked onto my trailer and headed out from central Kansas to western Kansas to pick up an Ebay purchase of a '50 auto chassis and complete drivetrain.
On my way I cruised along leisurely just listening to the 216 purr like a kitten as always. Sweet, very sweet! I met quite a number of autos going to a rod meet at Great Bend.
Upon destination arrival I met a fellow street rodder that still uses the old terms like shaved, choppped, etc. He had chopped 5" from the top of his 50 Chevy coupe, recessed the headlights, readied it for a one piece windshild, made a new grill, put it on a Camaro sub-frame and prepared it for a 500+ CID Caddy engine.
After we loaded my purchase he started giving me parts--radiator (2), holder (1), 12 volt converted starter, and spare tire which was not part of the purchase, etc. I also looked over his other cars before shaking hands and bidding adieu to a new friend. Always good to network for future parts needs. What a great fellow.
I headed to the city park where I made some sandwiches and washed them down with iced tea. It takes lots of iced tea when the temps push above 90º and you're driving windows down and vents open.
To make a full day out of the trip I made a side detour to a country cemetery where some ancestors are buried--my first time there.
From there I headed to the farm where I grew up to look over a future project, a 1946 Ford F1. I took some measurements from a '60 Chevy ½ ton, and checked to make sure a stored 4 bolt main 350 was still free turning. I drove through my hometown to see the changes made there--about 10 homes and business razed in the name of progress. Sigh!
Arrived home about 11 p.m. rested and relaxed from a very nice enjoyable day filled with out of the norm activity. Noted a little truck driver's arm mild sunburn.
Oh yeah, I met a number of motorcyclists and auto drivers that gave me a thumbs up for my old truck. Whee!
Word hard, play harder, enjoy life!

I drove the '54 to a family picnic on Saturday. A disabled young man rushed out of his house to talk to me about the truck after I parked it – told me it should last "at least ten more years, it was fixed up so nice!"
Truck got the "Dad" review at the picnic. He hated my new tires and said it looked like a farm truck (I WANTED it to look like a truck). He did approve of my pin-striping job on the cab belt line and on the rims, though.
THEN, we took the truck home to rebuild the wheel cylinder, which turned into a two-day rear brake rebuild. Glad it's over. Jim (my husband) is in the front yard washing the dust off right now – so we had a full truck weekend! I shooed him away, but he came back, so I gave him a hefty swat.. figured that was the last i'd see of him.
2 minutes later, that big fat bumblebee (who was obviously not happy with the outcome of our last encounter) proceeded to attack my face.
When the smoke settled, the bumblebee was drenched in WD40, and firmly under my size 11 shoe, but I had a bee stinger UP MY NOSE.
How exactly that bumblebee managed to get his rear end up my left nostril isn't clear, but what IS clear, is my nose swollen up to about 4 times it's regular size.

The latest projects are here. These include replacing the throttle pedal with one from my 74 organ donor truck (and its cable and bracket), fixing a leaking oil pressure gauge (and painting the entire dash as a result) and the rust repair. I'd post a picture of the results of that, but I just gave it a final coat of paint. (I hope.) There are a couple of pics of the initial stages of the rust repair on the web page. I'll add one of the completed door tomorrow. Finally, I replaced the sending unit in the fuel tank. It's only been a year since I've had a fuel gauge...and it was one major league pleasure to see the needle come up to 3/4 tank (about where it should be) when I switched the ignition on. I hope I don't have to mess with that one any more. I've also been doing a web page that lists a whole bunch of model cars (and a couple of trucks) for sale. I'd hoped to spend my retirement building models in the winter and my "real" cars and trucks in the summer...but it doesn't seem to be working out that way. My health really limits what I can do. But I'm grateful to have gotten some stuff done. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | well w/ some sunshine finally, I got a flyin start on resurrecting the fleetside box to replace the bondo ball on the back of the frankentruck - mostly cleaned the inside and ripped out all the loose bits , rust converted where the factory didn't paint, and gave the hidden places a coat of ZeroRust - now gotta get the rest stripped, a bit of sandblasting, and over to the neighbor to work his magic on them trashed quarters! got the tailgate done thurs/fri, and he's got that already gonna be a whole new truck soon Bill | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 19 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: May 2005 Posts: 19 | I tried to get all my clutch parts to put a dual disk clutch in the puller, loaded up some of my old rust buckets to carry to the scrap yard and in the process killed a couple of snakes that were in the pile. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 321 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 321 | only 114 today. although the humidity was a little high.

Saw one very interesting COE with front drive. Looked like stuff from the GMC motorhome they used to make.
At the show I was also trailer shopping, looking for the right one to drag more Stovebolts home with. I'm leaning toward an 18 footer to handle longer wheelbase trucks.
Then today I spent some time underneath my '72 cleaning out the PO's trailer wiring job, and rewiring for a new brake controller. One of the next few weeks I'll be using it to drag at least one more Stovebolt home. Unfortunately I ran out of time and now have a rats nest of wires hanging below the dash...
My weekend apparently needs to be extended. Can someone call the boss for me and say I'll have to take the week off?

I live right on the coast and the temperatures are usually about 70-75 in the summer, but the show was a little further inland and the temps hit 85. The increase in temperature made me a little sick out there, but found a shady spot and parked my chair. I won a second in Truck class, and won 1st in peoples choice, so it was a good day for me. My poor Nova didn't win anything and I think its a little jealous. Overall it was a fun day and today is nothing but rest. He's twelve. He, his mom, and her parents just moved to Texas from California (they turned out to be smarter than first thought).
Well, now, the rain was just pourin' outta the sky, but the wipers were doin' a fair job of swishin' the water off the windshield.
When it is 90+ degrees and raining, the humidity goes through the roof, and that makes it a bit cozy with the windows rolled most of the way up. But when you are driving around in a Stovebolt, who cares?
Came back with some Blue Bell ice cream and root beer, and we all sat on the back porch watchin' the rain, lightning and thunder in the distance across the pasture, enjoyin' a root beer float.
Stovebolts sure do make livin' a lot better, its just the bees ya gotta watch out fer.
Drivin' down a 2 lane country road in a stovebolt.....cowboy, it don't get no better than this!

I had gotten one fender sanded earlier this month and we had given it a shot of paint. The other fender underneith the headlight bullet has original paint on it.. We sure got a close match for not trying very hard. We placed the 46 3/4 and the 45 2 side by side and got pictures of them together. The 46 looks like a patchwork quilt, one blue fender, one white fender, one green headlight bullet, one blue headlight bullet, pblue paint around the window, white cab... almost looks like some form of art!
We hope to start tackling the rest of the body this week and at least get through the archeological layers of paint, and get a base prime on it to begin preparation for body work. | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,738 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,738 | Sorry about the late post... Peggy wants me to post something,"Or else." I don't have much to post but I don't want to find out what "else" is. I spent 30 minutes wiring up the right rear brake/taillight I installed on the '49 last weekend. Yup, that's it. Mid summer dry spell, moving irrigation stuff and keeping the pumps happy, shearing the older trees and fixing broke mowers took up most of the weekend. (Not to mention family visiting!) I did take the '49 for a toot to the gas station just to go for a drive. Car shows? I've heard about those ... John Ohh -- peeshaw "or else" One of John's buddies was having his driveway asphalted so he needed to get rid of the stone surface. He had it hauled over to our house. John was able to fix up a nice spot near the truck garage ... for the trucks and trailer that stay outdoors.
