Alan, the gear is pressed onto the cam,you cannot remove the gear only, the cam has to come out. Its the same for a Chevy or GMC.Either pull the engine or pull off the front sheet metal. Your local machine shop can remove and install the new gear for you.There are two dots,one on each gear, line them up.the engine is not at TDC, when the dots are aligned so don't worry about dist timing right yet.If you have any doubts about the fiber cam gear condition, replace it.A better replacement is the aluminum cam gear used on 235/261 truck engines.Do you have a service manual? shows how to check cam timing without pulling the timing cover.Fun yet?
