I had a problem with our '68 Impala. I replaced the distributor cap and decided to just quickly label the wires 1-2-3-etc going clockwise around the distributor starting from the wire in the front. No problem but about a year later I decided to replace the wires. When I put the wires back on the cap, I hooked them up as if the labels (which were still there) were indicating cylinder number!!! I had to get the car towed to my trusty ol' mechanic. He promised never to tell anyone how stupid I was.
But then, my buddy once dropped a pencil down #1 spark plug hole while following the travel of the cylinder. Moral here is: Use a long pencil.
