Sorry.What made you think this was a'Cam Timing' problem?
If you don't really have a good answer now you have a motor that is unrunnable and trouble shoot.
The first sportscar I ever worked on was a 250 Ferrari First page of the manual it said
'Keep the golden wrenches out'.......never forgot it.Fix what need fixin
I don't know much about thos short car motors but the GMC motors have a mark and spec to check problem without taking it apart!
