Nothing causes backfiring like exhaust leaks. Fresh air gets pulled in, unburned fuel mixes in exhaust and gets hot enough to ignite.
Also, leaking ex valves cause this.
Check the integrity of the ignition wiring (12volt side). Looseness at the switch or anywhere else will cause this too.
