I've registered on this forum because I'm eyeballing a complete '40 Chev pickup still sitting in the same field it has resided in for the last 21 years,...that I know of! It's a Colorado truck and has no more than surface rust. I hope to speak to the owner very soon, now that I've secured the finances necessary. I inspected the vehicle last summer with the owner's sister, and she told me that he wanted $2000 for it. It's had a minor sloppy farming alteration done for towing at one point, and some fender repairs where the weld was never smoothed, but it is all there, including the drive train. I'd swear that with air in the tires, it would look like it'd start and drive as is!! I WOULD attempt to tow it the 1.5 miles to my home from it's "spot" after ensuring it had reliable rubber to roll on. I then intend on disassembling the engine and rebuilding it. Lube tranny and diff., check brake function and condition, and off, down the county road it'll go for a short!! Guess my point is that this truck is only one step below a good used vehicle in outward appearance. The sister of the owner learned to drive in it.
Very difficult questions at best, but guess for me; how much might this truck be worth as is, and after I refurbish/rebuild the truck, and put it back on the road with paint and bodywork done? I would re-use all the origonal parts that could be refurbished, repaired, or rebuilt. I sure appreciate your input, and hope to have a truck to discuss on this forum very soon!
I do this as a hobby,...I have eight vehicles I've collected,....most of which I've done ALL the refurbish/rebuild work myself. My '42 JD B tractor is my oldest at this time, and I have a '68 Mustang, '69 F150, '76 Camaro/Z, '72 Superbeetle, '79 Spider conv., '88 RX-7 conv., and a turbo Subaru. I just like putting nice machinery back on the job! But I investigate first, as I'm doing here. Thanks, Todd.
