Thanks JYF. If it doesn't rain tonight, I'll get the oilpan off & take a look. I'll borrow the digital camera from work, and post pics of pump, inside of pan and bearing shell(s) for discussion.
The reason I'm paranoid is the original 235 in the car was killed by bearing failure.
