One step at a time.
If you have a strong battery, just pull the coil wire and the rocker cover and crank it and see if it's lubing the top end or if nothing is coming up. It will be fairly obvious if it's working or not. If yes, check the guage and see if you can find the source of the problem there.
Either way, I don't think you could have done much damage from lack of lubrication. Especially since nothing it rapping or slapping too bad. You're ok.
