Not really....
However, I'm one of those guys that real mechanics hate!
It sounds like you've probably saved the engine from destruction, so I would figure out some way to shim that distributor up very slightly to give you some clearance. If you don't have any more grinding metal you might be lucky this time. So far this whole thing doesn't make sense to me....
