I have done it on a 12" shaft on my '62 K10, between the TH400 and the transfer case. I had access to a lathe that would handle the shaft.
A 4 foot long shaft needs a longer lathe. If you look at the ends there are almost always centers drilled in. The shaft gets mounted on those centers and one weld cut away. The extra inch is trimmed off and the parts pressed back together for rewelding. Then it needs to be balanced. I have had this done a couple of time in Minneapolis, for about $70 to $100. Most big truck places, some specialty drive line shops can do it. It is a simple process that needs to be carefully done or a mess can ensue.
